Microneedling

Microneedling (aka Collagen Induction Treatment) is the latest advancement in non-surgical procedures for rejuvenating both skin texture and overall appearance. This treatment has many uses including diminishing fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, stretch marks, correcting uneven pigmentation of the skin, improving the appearance of loose skin, and reversing signs of sun damage.

Microneedling provides controlled micro-injuries to the skin’s surface to create mild inflammation. This inflammation stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, resulting in the improvement of the appearance of skin tone, texture and quality.

Microneedling is an incredible treatment to target these specific concerns and is fundamental as a part of regular skin maintenance and health.

What To Expect

Prior to treatment, a triple-strength, prescription numbing cream is applied to the treatment area so that the procedure is painless. After removing the numbing cream, the skin is thoroughly cleansed with disinfectant to ensure sterility of the area during the procedure. Approximately three passes of the microneedling pen are required to the treatment area; vertically, horizontally, and in a circular motion, to ensure maximal microneedling of the surface area being treated thereby yielding the best results. The procedure itself takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

After microneedling treatment you can expect that the skin will feel tight, and dry, with some redness as a result of the controlled inflammation achieved necessary to stimulate collagen production. You will feel as though you have a mild sunburn. This feeling will last anywhere from 48 to 72 hours.

Post-procedure, a calming gel composed of hyaluronic acid and other hydrating emollients is applied to the skin to improve the healing process and soothe and hydrate the skin. Patients should avoid exercise and sun exposure for 2-3 days post-procedure, until the skin has returned to its normal, pre-treatment state. Most activities are safe to resume the day following treatment.

While a noticeable plumping of the skin may be observable right away, the process of collagen generation, and improvements in skin quality and texture will take a few weeks. Improvements in skin can continue for up to six months.

What Can Microneedling Treat?

Microneedling is safe for ANY skin type and colour and is indicated for the following:
  • Enlarged pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scarring and discolouration
  • Stretch marks
  • Dull looking skin
  • To maintain overall skin health, quality and luminosity
  • Shrinkage of pores and blackheads
  • Smoothing and plumping the skin
  • Stimulate the body’s natural production of collagen

When Will I Notice Results?

Results from microneedling may begin to appear after once treatment, but best results are realized with a series of 3, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. This is due to the mechanism of action of the treatment, which involves a controlled injury to the skin to create inflammation which triggers the collagen induction process. Multiple injuries, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, stimulate the most collagen in the most effective way.

The day of the treatment, you will experience some mild swelling and redness of the skin. This is due to the small sterile needles that penetrate into the skin. A plumping and hydrated effect will be noticed immediately. Once the mild redness and swelling subsides, patients notice their skin feels tighter and plumped, with a more even tone and texture. After a series of treatments, results can last years, and if treating conditions such as acne scarring or sun damage, results are permanent.

Does This Treatment Hurt?

Microneedling is generally very well tolerated. Prior to the treatment, a prescription-strength topical numbing cream is left on the treatment area (the face, neck or hands) so that the treatment is painless and comfortable. Please notify your injector if you have experienced any issues with treatments in the past, or have an unusually low pain tolerance.
